Intravitreal injections: controlled delivery of medication into the eye
Before and during the injection
Before an injection, the diagnosis, current retinal findings and often OCT are assessed. The injection is performed under sterile conditions after local anaesthesia of the ocular surface. The medication used and the interval between follow-up visits or further injections depend on the disease and its course.
After the injection
A foreign-body sensation or small conjunctival haemorrhage may occur temporarily. Rare but important complications include intraocular infection, inflammation, increased intraocular pressure, retinal tear or retinal detachment. Increasing pain, marked redness or significant deterioration of vision after an injection require immediate assessment.
