A stye is an acute inflammation or infection of an eyelid gland. Typical symptoms include redness, swelling, tenderness and pain.
Chalazion
A chalazion usually develops from a blocked meibomian gland and often presents as a persistent, usually painless eyelid lump.
When to seek assessment
Ophthalmic examination is advisable when swelling is marked, pain increases, the problem persists or recurs, vision is affected, or the diagnosis is unclear.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the examination findings. Conservative measures, medication or a minor surgical procedure may be considered depending on the cause and clinical course.
Urgent symptoms
Severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, reduced vision, injury or other concerning symptoms may require prompt or emergency medical assessment.
