Parent-Child Pass Eye Examination in Vienna
The ophthalmic examination in Austria’s Parent-Child Pass is an important appointment for the early detection of refractive errors, strabismus and amblyopia. The scheduled eye examination between 22 and 26 months of age must be performed by an ophthalmologist.

What is examined?
Visual function & refractive errors
Age-appropriate assessment of visual function and, when needed, objective measurement of refractive error.
Eye alignment & strabismus
Assessment of eye alignment and examination for signs of strabismus or amblyopia.
Anterior and posterior eye segments
Specialist examination of the eyes; depending on the examination, pupil-dilating eye drops may be necessary.
When does the examination take place?
Austria’s Parent-Child Pass programme includes two eye examinations. The examination between 10 and 14 months may also be performed by other designated doctors. The eye examination between 22 and 26 months is performed by an ophthalmologist or an appropriate specialist outpatient clinic.
Please bring
Parent-Child Pass, e-card and any existing ophthalmic reports. If your child already wears glasses, please bring them as well.
Why examine early?
Visual disorders can remain unnoticed in young children for a long time. Early diagnosis is especially important because vision develops during the first years of life and conditions such as amblyopia should be treated as early as possible.
