Glaucoma in Vienna
Early detection, follow-up and individual treatment planning for glaucoma using modern diagnostics.

Why is glaucoma screening important?
Glaucoma can remain unnoticed for a long time. Assessment of the optic nerve together with intraocular pressure, visual field and other findings is essential.
Diagnostics
- Intraocular pressure measurement
- Optic nerve assessment
- OCT when clinically indicated
- Visual field examination
Treatment options
- Pressure-lowering medication
- SLT when clinically appropriate
- Follow-up examinations
- Further surgical treatment if required
Treatment is based on individual risk
Treatment decisions are not based on a single pressure reading. Age, optic nerve, visual field, cornea and previous course are considered together.
Many forms cause no clear symptoms at first. Regular examinations are therefore especially important when risk is increased.
SLT is a laser procedure that can be used to lower intraocular pressure in certain forms of open-angle glaucoma.

Questions about glaucoma
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve. Intraocular pressure is an important risk factor, but it is not the only one.
Which examinations are important for follow-up?
Depending on the findings, intraocular pressure, optic nerve, visual field and imaging such as OCT are assessed.
What treatment options are available?
Depending on the situation, medication, laser treatment such as SLT or surgery may be considered. The choice depends on the individual findings.
Glaucoma follow-up involves more than intraocular pressure
How glaucoma is assessed
Depending on the situation, assessment includes intraocular pressure, optic nerve and nerve-fibre layer, OCT, visual field and, when appropriate, examination of the drainage angle. The overall findings and their change over time are decisive.
Treatment and follow-up
Treatment depends on the type of glaucoma, baseline pressure, optic nerve damage and risk of progression. Options include eye drops, SLT laser and, when required, surgery. Follow-up remains important even when intraocular pressure is well controlled.
